Thursday Races to Continue in 2016
For two months this summer, the CSULB Sailing Association competed in Seal Beach Yacht Club’s weekly Thursday night races. “Pop Tops,” as it’s known, is a five-series event hosted from May through September. Each series features four races.
The CSULB Shields competed in Series Two and Series Three, racing in their own three-boat class for S2 then mixing it up with the PHRF-D fleet in S3.
Mission Bay All the Way!
CSULB Sailing was back in San Diego for our annual Mission Bay weekend of camping, swimming and Hobie sailing from May 14-17.
The club was extra motivated for the trip this year after 2015’s trip was canceled due to a rare rainstorm and flash flooding at the campground.
Over 25 members attended the event at San Diego’s Campland on the Bay, sailing on Lasers or one of the club’s four Hobie catamarans.
Catalina Crossing Canceled
For the first time in five years, the CSULB Sailing Association was forced to cancel our annual spring break sail to Two Harbors, Catalina. The 2016 crossing, originally scheduled for March 30th, was indefinitely postponed due to excessively high winds in San Pedro Bay — some of which topped 30 mph.
With the exception of 2011 and now 2016, the club has made the 50+ mile roundtrip sail every year since 2010.
Wind and weather permitting, we’ll be back in 2017!
CSULB Sails Strong at Midwinters
CSULB Sailing’s lone entry into the Southern California Yacht Association (SCYA) annual Midwinter Regatta finished a strong second place in PHRF group D on February 20 & 21, 2016.
Team “Strong Beach” — Paul Sorenson, Estela Tejidor, Tim Gallagher and skipper Mike Fratantoro — finished second in the three-boat fleet, winning one race outright and missing another win by only five seconds.
PHRF races were hosted locally by Seal Beach Yacht Club (SlBYC) and sailed in Long Beach Harbor.
Get Involved: Spring 2016 Sailing Kicks Off
Cal State Long Beach’s spring 2016 semester begins Tuesday, which means the new sailing semester is about to kick off!
Later this month, CSULB Sailing will host a number of activities for potential new members to get involved and learn more about what the Sailing club has to offer.
Top 10: Best Sailing Moments of 2015
2016 is here, and with it another great year of sailing is officially over. In the last 12 months the CSULB Sailing Association has built on its successful 60-year maritime tradition in Long Beach and has continued to create sailing opportunities for the campus community.
This year the club provided beginner sailing instruction to more than 150 new sailors, sponsored weekly activities for its membership, and donated its time to community service projects. Thanks go out to our faculty advisor and instructor Carol Lyon, our two student commodores Tatiana Misares and Kyle Henneberque, our staff Dennis Trombley and Charlie Abbott, student officers and everyone else who played a role in 2015’s success.
We’re excited to continue the momentum in 2016, but before we turn the page, let’s take a look back at the Top 10 sailing moments 2015 will be most remembered for…..
Damage in Control at 2015 Boxing Day Race
Club members Chris Hill and Jaime Rosier won the Capri 14.2 class at the ABYC’s Boxing Day Race aboard their boat, “Team Damage Boy.” Chris and Jaime overcame a late start and fought back from 4th place to take the Capri victory, finishing 41st overall out of 63 boats. Meanwhile, Dennis Trombley and Carol Lyon entered a Shields in the race and took 25th place.
The annual “pursuit” race was held on December 26th, 2015. The event gives slower boats (such as Sabots and Capris) a time-measured head start over faster boats (such as Shields, Lidos and Lasers). A Viper 640 won the overall race this year.

Club Hosts Holiday Kayak Paddle
Another year of sailing is almost at an end, which means it’s time for the Sailing Association’s annual Holiday Kayak Paddle and club party.
Each December the CSULBSA invites members and beginner students to Leeway Sailing Center for some night kayaking through Alamitos Bay and the Naples canals. After the paddle, the club shares food and gifts at Leeway in a traditional “potluck” feast.
This year’s kayak paddle was Sunday, Dec 20th, with almost 20 people in attendance. The highlight of the night was the food, specifically the homemade tamales from Dulce Olivieri and Estela Tejidor, not to mention enough desserts to fill two tables.

CSULB Sailing Association
